Rainforest Alliance Survey: Eco-Friendly Travel - How Do You Rate?

Posted on February 25, 2008 3:47 PM

With the goal of promoting sustainable tourism, Fujifilm and the Rainforest Alliance are conducting a survey on travel habits and need your help.

Sustainable tourism promotes a low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate income, employment, and the conservation of local ecosystems. Fujifilm recently announced its sponsorship of the Rainforest Alliance’s first annual ‘Picture Sustainability Photo Contest’ to raise awareness around issues of sustainability and conservation by inviting US residents to submit photos illustrating sustainable agriculture, forestry and tourism.

To take the brief survey, please click on the following link: Eco-Friendly Travel Survey
The results of the survey will remain anonymous and will be used to help us create awareness for eco-friendly travel.

Also, don’t forget to visit the Rainforest Alliance’s “Picture Sustainability” photo contest web site and enter your sustainable tourism photo to win! http://www.raphotocontest.org

CONGRATULATIONS SHARON AMROSE!

Congratulations Sharon Amrose!

Sharon Amrose's photo - taken with a Fujifilm FinePix F30 while visiting SeaWorld this Spring - was chosen by SeaWorld as part of its Share Photos program. Her photo of two killer whales jumping mid-air demonstrates Fujifilm's picture stabilization, and will earn Ms. Amrose a place on the SeaWorld web site. Here's the winning photo.
Says Ms. Amrose: “My 7 and 9 year olds loved the show (again)! The photo shows how unBELIEVEable these mammals truly are. By the way, I took this photo with my new Fujifilm F30, which I love! This is the first photo competition I entered. Your amazing camera helped me win.” For more information on SeaWorld.

FUJIFILM To Power Primary U.S. Manufacturing Complex With Community Landfill Gas

Posted on June 27, 2007 3:15 PM

“We are extremely happy this project worked out,” said Robbie Templeton, Chairman of the Greenwood County Council in Greenwood, S.C. The County was facing a deadline imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce or eliminate methane emissions from the Landfill. In the absence of a partner like Fujifilm, the County’s other option was to flare, or burn-off, the gas at the landfill. “Once again FUJIFILM proves itself to be one of our best corporate citizens,” Templeton continued.

By using the methane as energy Fujifilm is preventing methane emissions -- which are more than twenty times more damaging to the ozone than carbon dioxide -- from being released into the atmosphere from the landfill. The amount of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions avoided by this Fujifilm effort would be similar to that generated by 208,000 barrels of oil each year, or the equivalent of the emissions from more than 17,000 vehicles each year.

“This is a situation where we have come up with a solution that is good for our business, good for the community, and very good for the environment -- and that is something that’s always been inherent in Fujifilm’s culture globally,” said Johnny Udo, director of Environmental, Health & Safety for Fujifilm in South Carolina. “This landfill gas-to-energy project will help us reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 10%, will significantly reduce our energy costs, and will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.“

Fujifilm Sponsoring Free Mammograms

Posted on May 4, 2007 2:18 PM

This Mother's Day, Fujifilm is encouraging all women over 40 to give themselves the gift of health and is funding free mammograms to women in one Harlem neighborhood as part of its public education campaign called Images of Health: Mammograms for a Million Moms.

"It is critical that all women have the opportunity to participate in preventive healthcare, such as breast cancer screening," said LeShawn Hodge, parent coordinator at PS 149. "We recognize the importance of early detection and are delighted to be able to give the mothers and grandmothers of our students, as well as women throughout the neighborhood – women who otherwise may never get screened – the opportunity to receive a service that could potentially save their lives."

On Monday, May 7, women of screening age are invited to receive a FREE mammogram at PS 149 Sojourner Truth School, 41 West 117th Street, New York. In addition to a free mammogram, a health educator will be onsite to answer questions and provide educational materials to help encourage better breast health year round. The free mammograms are being funded by Fujifilm and the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), and carried out by the American-Italian Cancer Foundation (AICF). Appointments are required and can be made by calling 1-800-564-6868.

Made possible by a grant from Fujifilm, a National Zoo partner in conservation education, this new, post-doctoral residency program builds on the Zoo's tradition of training students in a variety of disciplines and inspiring them to pursue careers in animal care, conservation science and science education.

"Fujifilm is proud to revitalize the National Zoo's curatorial program," said Celia Spence, Vice President, Environmental and Safety Affairs, FUJIFILM Holdings America Corporation. "Caring for and preserving the environment is at the core of all of Fujifilm's activities, and our sponsorship of the curatorial residency at the National Zoo is a symbol of that commitment to the next generation of conservation leaders."

Fujifilm's sponsorship of the Curatorial Residency at the Smithsonian's National Zoo is one component in its corporate social responsibility platform, which fosters environmental consciousness while supporting Fujifilm's sustainable business priorities. As a funder of the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat and Asia Trail and as a member of the National Zoo's Partners in Conservation Education program, Fujifilm is proud to have been a leader in supporting the National Zoo.
